Plastic Surgery Mistake Leads To Permanent Brain Damage For Young Woman

When young women see models and tv celebrities with augmented physiques, many want to have plastic surgery to achieve a certain look. Plastic surgery is often seen as a minor elective treatment that will require a few days of rest and recovery, with few side effects. A young mother in Florida has suffered permanent brain damage after a botched breast implant surgery.

Linda Perez was an 18-year-old mother of one who wanted breast augmentation. She paid the Coral Gables Cosmetic Center in Miami, Florida $2,800 for breast implant surgery. However, before the surgery began, she had a reaction to the anesthesia. She experienced breathing difficulties, and her heart rate and blood pressure fell to dangerous levels. She fell unconscious and after the doctor tried for more than 30 minutes to try and resuscitate her, she was rushed to the hospital. She remained in a coma for weeks.

Perez had done her homework on the surgery center before she decided to go through with the procedure. She reviewed the cosmetic center’s website, which failed to list the anesthesiologist in her case, Dr. Mario Albert Diaz. It turned out Dr. Diaz was a convicted felon who had served 30 months in a federal penitentiary for selling drugs online. The department of health only suspended his medical license for one-year after he was released from prison.

When Perez came out of her coma, she was left seriously brain damaged. During the procedure, she had suffered permanent brain damage due to the lack of oxygen to her brain. She is unable to care for her son, unable to walk, feed herself, or go to the bathroom without help. She can only speak a few words and can stand alone for only a few seconds at a time. Her mother provides for her care but is unable to cover her medical expenses.

Dr. Diaz did not carry enough insurance to cover Perez’s medical expenses. Her family has taken to requesting donations online to help pay for her round-the-clock care. Mariela Diaz, Perez’s mother, hopes that her story will make young girls think twice about seeking plastic surgery. “I tell the daughters and mothers to think it over before going to those clinics because they never know how they are going to come out,” Mariela Diaz told a local paper, “They should just accept what they have naturally.”

Dr. Diaz was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and reimburse the Department of Health for their investigation. Despite the tragic brain injury caused to Linda Perez, Dr. Diaz remains able to practice medicine in the state of Florida
